When is the right time to sell old machines?

An insight on devesting construction equipment.....

In addition and from comments on my last blog “Making money with your old machines”, I would like to zoom in on :
“When is the right time to sell old machines?”

I would like to comment on the consequences of certain scenarios .

Waiting to sell old machines will depreciate the price realization, meaning , you get less money for older machines. Some people would say, “these older machines are written down to a minimum, they are not costing me money and even with low utilization , I can make money with them”

True and not true.
True, these old machines generate cash flow
Not true, the likeliness of repairs even major repair need to be considered.
Low utilization and small turnover will be absorbed easily by unexpected repairs.
Also think of the negative impact on your company image and branding when operating old fleet.
Customer are willing to pay more for younger machines.

Selling machine too young is a difficult thing and takes a lot of effort from your organization.
Why? Because you need to realize a certain price level, to reach this price level it takes specific customers. To find these customers cost a lot of marketing , energy and the question is will that pay off in the end.

Logically speaking don’t sell to young , don’t sell to old. “Yeah! We could figure this out ourselves”, you would say. Correct, and there for I would like to give some examples from the market and from experience

In terms of years/life of the equipment it also depends on what type of equipment is it. Is it the type that has a rough life. For example a skid steer loader in a demolition application has had it best breath the first 3 years of its life. These 3 years it is usually also covered under manufacturer’s warranty. You could risk another 4th year but the advice is to sell it before it turn the age op 5.

The same counts for generators when they are in high utilization applications. It can run 2000 or more hours per annum. That means 8000 to 10000 hours in 4 to 5 years. A normal criteria for overhaul is the hours on the engine life, which could well be 14000. When the machine is below 10000 hours it still has a certain value in the used equipment market because it can be used another few years with lower utilization (second life)

Are we talking about a portable air compressor it is again a different story.
Portable compressors usually run 500 or less hours a year for small machines (less than 10 m3 per minute or 380 cfm) and less than a 1000 hours for the bigger machines. Technically speaking these machine will have a 12 to 16 years life in front of them. Commercially speaking this type of equipment should not be older than 8 to 10 years to still bring good money.

I can give more examples or zoom in on specific market or fleet examples.
Are you in doubt of specific equipment you can always give me a call or contact me via email.

Over 40 New Doosan Large Compressors for MR Air Force

MR Air Force, part of Machinery Resale bvba, based at Deinze in Belgium, has taken delivery of over 40 new large portable air compressors from Doosan Infracore Portable Power.  A new service launched by MR Air Force, not as a rental company but to enable business partners such as rental companies, dealers and agents to set up and run specialised, long term rental programmes for large portable compressors.

At the handover of the new Doosan compressors, Nick Verbeek, Director of Doosan Portable Power EMEA, was joined by Filip Maes and Henk Uphoff, Owner and Managing Director, respectively, of MR Air Force and Machinery Resale.  Nick Verbeek said: “We are delighted to win this order from MR Air Force, which forms part of an innovative new approach to the international compressor market.”

Henk Uphoff commented: “We are aiming our new service at countries in the EU and we chose Doosan Portable Power because the machines are well known in the market and form the A standard in compressors worldwide.  Parts are very accessible within the EU and the machines keep their value even after several years in the rental market.”

The new order delivered to MR Air Force includes 21/215 compressors equipped with aftercooler and dual pressure options and 12/235 and 9/270 compressors equipped with aftercoolers.  All the new compressors are powered by the Cummins 6IRQ9AE diesel engine and feature remote machine monitoring.

Henk Uphoff added: “Close contacts between Machinery Resale and Doosan Portable Power and a mutual understanding of each other’s businesses were crucial to closing this large deal for 41 compressors (with an option for 60).”

"Making money with your old machines"

The capital within an equipment rental fleet is in my opinion, a "hidden treasure" of possibilities.

The capital within an equipment rental fleet is in my opinion, a "hidden treasure" of possibilities. By looking at the fleet from a different prospective, I see something else then just machines. I see a Remarketing opportunity beyond your belief. A fleet reorganization, selling old machines, will bring in  more money that you can use for reinvestment in equipment, additional profit or to pay for your other investments.

But not just selling your old (intensive care) machinery is  possible. Also machines that have (too) low utilisation, are eligible to sell second hand (disinvestment). Machines with little or no utilisation just costs money. Your machines are older and less valuable so they should be written off without any benefits in return. By selling them you avoid obsolescence and generate cash flow.

Often, you will have in your fleet machines that came in from a merger or acquisition. Problem is that there are many different brands of the same type of machines in your fleet. That brings more complexity in your maintenance program and result in higher parts inventory and higher cost. Restrict the number of brands is the advice. "And the rest?", disinvest!,  so sell your second-hand equipment and make money! You can earn a lot of  money for your company as owner or fleet manager.

JAPANESE BUY LARGE NUMBER OF GENERATORS FROM CHINA

Deinze 20 april 2011, JAPANESE BUY LARGE NUMBER OF GENERATORS FROM CHINA

The Japanese in Europe applied for large numbers of used generators, have now indicated that the pressure to supply is off. This is what Mr. Mizuno declared to Henk Uphoff of Machinery Resale this morning.
After the earthquake and tsunami, there is a great need for generators to produce electricity. Particularly small and medium size businesses are looking for solutions. The quest for power is actual for many Japanese companies to pick up the everyday life and get back to normal.

"We will first avaid the supply of new generators from China for the  first emergency needs" said Yousuke Mizuno, head of Japanese business activities in Europe. "The Japanese will, if there is still a need for generators, come back to Europe " , said Henk Uphoff, Managing Director at Machinery Resale. "Disappointed we are of course , because we were talking about very large numbers and we as a company can respond very quickly to a need "

USETEC great succes for MACHINERY RESALE

USETEC great succes for MACHINERY RESALE

Cologne, 8 April 2011. Making up the balance after the ending of USETEC, the world fair for used machinery and technology.
For Machinery Resale from Deinze, Belgium a great success. The purpose was to make connections and get to know people but the end result was not only that but also written orders.

Customers were interested during the three day event to also pay a visit to the company in Deinze. That was at 2.5 hours drive away from the fair. This meant that customers were motivated to visit the Deinze facility.

The stand was more than okay. As part of the collective stand of DUMA (Dutch Used Machinery Association) Filip Maes and Henk Uphoff ran stand number G11 3.

Below a picture of stand G113 at the USETEC in Cologne

5 useful TIPS when buying a used mini excavator

5 useful TIPS when buying a used mini excavator

5 useful TIPS to buy a used mini excavator

1)
Make sure you know what job you are going to do with the machine.
important is to know the weight of the mini excavator and the digging depth.
In most cases this will determine the size of the machine you select.
Under sizing will result in not being able to do the job effectively.
Over sizing will result in the purchase of a more expensive machine and extra fuel consumption due to the fact that a larger machine has a bigger engine.

2)
Make sure you buy the right buckets with the machine. An over sized bucket will result in overloading the machine or even cause the machine to tip over which can be very dangerous. Also selecting the wrong bucket will result in ineffective work performed and loss of productivity.

3)
Ones you have selected  the weight of the machine and its other specifications, start looking for a reliable supplier. A reliable supplier will be honest about the condition of the used mini excavator in his inventory. In most cases the reliable supplier will know the machine history or at least who was the previous owner.

4)
Checking the condition yourself is an important step in buying the right used mini excavator.
Best check on the following important items:
-Condition of the (rubber) tracks. Tracks that have less than 40% of the remaining life left will need replacement earlier, this will result in higher maintenance costs
-Check the wear and play of the boom pins and bushings. This can be done when the machine runs or stands still. When it runs , push the bucket slowly on the ground and check for play on the several pins of the boom and dipper. When it can’t run push back and forth the side of the boom and you will experience play in the pins. If you are not sure how much this may be , ask the seller, only of course the better most reliable supplier will give you a fair answer.
-By rotating the cabine or canopy of the machine you can check play in the crown of the mini excavator.
-Check the engine compartment on leakages , especially in the hydraulic pump area and the top of the engine. Leakage may indicate engine problems and will result in high repair cost.
-If you are looking for a used mini excavator that looks good it is obvious you can check from the outside.
-Check the hour meter reading and check if the hour meter is operating. A 10 year old mini excavator with less than 1000 hours is likely to be in correct.

5)
Make sure you investigate the price level of machines, but all used mini excavators are unique therefore determine a price bandwidth. Also brand can influence the market price. Some brands such as Kubota, Takeuchi, caterpillar can be very popular in some countries, this can vary a lot country by country.

5 useful TIPS to buy a used portable compressor

5 useful TIPS to buy a used portable compressor

1)Make sure your know what capacity you need, without this knowing up front you can’t select the right machine which may result in to high purchase cost and unnecessary fuel cost. Specialized suppliers can give you the right advise and select the machine for your application.

2)The same counts for  knowing what pressure you need. Just selecting higher pressure also results in higher purchase cost. But more importantly it will result in extremely higher fuel cost. 10% higher pressure may result in 40-50% more fuel consumption

3)Buying an A-brand compressor saves money in the long run because after a few years it will give you higher value when you need to trade it in. Independent suppliers can give you a range of models and brands to compare.

4)Do not only look at the outside of a compressor. The technical condition is far more important. This is the heart of the machine, it makes sure it does where it is designed for. There for ask for the machine history. Suppliers who do not share this information are commonly not the most reliable.

5)Last but not least , find yourself a reliable supplier. The reliable supplier gives you peace of mind so you can focus on your core business.

GOOD LUCK in selecting your next compressor.

Construction activity in a dip?

Construction activity in a dip.

JANUARY 2011 - There were no surprises in January's CE Barometer survey, with harsh winter conditions in Northern Europe and the traditional New Year holiday seeing month-on-month construction activity take a dip.

There was a balance of -4.7% for this measure of activity - the balance figure being the percentage of positive respondents minus the negative percentage. It was the first time in a year that respondents to the survey said month-on-month activity had fallen.

But this is probably nothing to panic about. Results for January always show a slowdown, and they usually recover in February or March.

Indeed, comfort can be taken from the continued positive outlook for the future. A balance of +47,7% of respondents said they expected activity to be higher in a year's time, the strongest this measure of confidence has been since February 2010. Survey respondents also continue to report higher activity levels than a year ago.

As a result, the CE Climate - an amalgamation of all three confidence measures - remained well in positive territory at +23,7%. It has sat in this region since last spring, and has looked fairly stable throughout.

Exhaust emission 2011

Manufacturers are confronted with next year’s new emission regulations.

06-jan-2011. Manufacturers are confronted with next year’s new emission regulations.

It applies to the 130 to 560 kW engine range which covers a huge variety of machines, encompassing pretty much all of what would be described as earthmoving machines for the civil engineering sector., including the larger range of portable compressors and a significant amount of generator models. The regulations will apply to all off-road haulers up to about 60 tonnes capacity, excavators from about 25 tonnes to well over 100 tonnes, wheeled loaders from the 3 m3 buck class and upwards , graders above about 15 tonnes and portable compressors above 20  m³/min.

The likely launch pad for these new machines will be the Samoter exhibition in Verona, Italy in early March and/or ConExpo in Las Vegas, US two weeks later.

But this move to new, lower emission machines will also emphasis a split that has been growing for some time in the global construction equipment industry. In order to meet the new emission standards, Interim Tier 4 and Stage IIIB engines need to be fitted with a variety of exhaust after treatment systems to reduce pollution.

In order for these systems to work, machines need to be fuelled with diesel containing very low levels of sulphur. However, this type of fuel is generally only available in Europe and the US - the regions that are introducing new controls - so to avoid breakdowns in other parts of the world, manufacturers are now producing machines for less regulated countries, which is to say, the rest of the world.

Sales increase 2011

12.7% increase in construction equipment sales in the US in 2011

USA, 30th December 2010. Members of the US based Association of Equipment Manufacturers are predicting a 12.7% increase in construction equipment sales in the US in 2011 followed by a 14.8% increase in 2012. According to the AEM

Copper expensive

Copper has never been so expensive
The price of copper hit a new record on Wednesday  (LONDON - December 29 2010. ) $ 9,447 (7211 euros) per tonne.

LONDON - December 29 2010. That was according to commodity traders to deal with a weakened U.S. dollar and supply problems from the Collahuasi copper mine in Chile, the third largest in the world.

The price of this
metal , in the construction and the semiconductor industry widely used, boosted by a strong demand from China. The Chinese government announced last week to raise interest rates to curb growth and inflation. Yet analysts do not believe that this will have much influence on the copper price due to continuing strong demand.

"This will decrease
liquidity  and will probably influence demand. But in order to influence the price of copper and inflation, China will have to take severe measures'' said an analyst at Commerzbank.

On the currency market the dollar weakened to $ 1.3130. This is the currency in which copper is traded on the international market, it makes it more attractive for investors who count in euros or pounds.

The prices of other commodities such as lead, zinc and aluminum found their way up again Wednesday.
